Road Trip Bag a.k.a. The Big Bag

big bag
Well, we're leaving this weekend for a 3 week road trip and I needed a big bag to take with me. I wanted it to sit on the seat next to me and be able to hold the books, magazines, projects, and of course regular purse stuff that I take with me. I don't know when I'll have time to read or do any projects but it's a comfort to have it with me anyway, just in case :)

big bag with apple
The fabric is actually several kitchen towels that I got at Kmart specifically to use for a bag; I really loved the print and colors and couldn't pass them up, especially when the price is 5 towels for $4! I embroidered a few details on the pink flowers. I used fusible fleece again for the interfacing which makes it stand on its own but is still soft. The handle has fleece too and I machine stitched some ribbing on it. I put the apple in the picture so you could get an idea of how big it is. It'll be perfect to use for the pool later this summer.

big bag inside
The interior is light brown ticking and there are muslin pockets on both sides of the bag - I love lots of pockets! When I get back I'll draw up the pattern and I'll make a smaller version too. I'm quite smitten with the profile of this bag.

Love it! Have a great vacation!

hi love all the things that you make, and i love your blog. was wondering if you ever put up a pattern or tutorial for this bag. i went to my local crate and barrel and got some gorgeous towels and fleece interfacing, but am unsure as to how to proceed. will you be putting up a tut? or just let me know how you did a bag with interfacing and a liner without it showing stitching?? thanks

You really should sell your patterns. I am just starting to sew again after a looong hiatus, and would love to have somewhere to start. Your stuff is really beautiful. Thanks.

Must have that bag! NOW! Oh, would make such a great diaper bag... :)

This is super fabulous. Love the print and the bag design. :)

Please do put up the pattern! That is LOVELY!

Beautiful bag! My sister has been asking for an airplane bag (for carry-on type stuff) and this would be perfect! And I love the fabric - so wonderful that you are looking in unusual places for inspiration... Gorgeous!

LOVE your site! Beautiful things...I'm so jealous of your talent and creativity! :) Your blog and shop are now linked on my blog!

You are so clever, this will be great for your road trip, have fun!

I love the bag!!! Your work is incredible!!!I want one, unfortunately I live in Berlin, Germany and I can't run to K-Mart, why am I being punished like this? How big is the bag, I think I need one just like it, as if I didn't own enough bags but one more is a must.

I absolutely LOVE this bag. Congratulations :)

I found you through Giao. What a beautiful bag - it sucked me in, and now I'm drooling over your numerous creations.

totally random question for when you return: what do you stuff your pincushions with?

Love your purse ! My daughter called last night to tell me she made me one...happy me. And, in your sidebar (thankyou) you have under books, Amy Krouse Rosenthal's book, which I meant to look for and completely forgot.

You are making me want to go to Kmart too....You are so talented!

Too CUTE!!

Wow!!! I love that vibrant fabric!!! I so wish I knew how to make bags... Yours is gorgeous and I'm admittedly envious!

I L-O-V-E this! Great choice of fabric, I'm heading off to KMart tomorrow!!

I L-O-V-E this! Great choise of fabric, I'm heading off to KMart tomorrow!!

LOVE this one Cassi! Who would've thought it was from kitchen towels???

your stuff is the bomb. who would know it's made of dishtowels? :-)

Have a fun & safe trip! I adore this bag, I love your clever use of the kitchen towels. That print is great. I buy up pretty cloth napkins from crate and barrell sometimes to make pillows, and seat covers for my dining room set. The best fabrics are found in the housewares section. :)

what a great find at kmart--that bag is rockin'!!! looks sturdy, and i love pockets too :)

Wow! The bag came out great. I've never heard of fleece interfacing. That's really neat. Great job!

If we had a Kmart nearby I'd be there in a flash. This is my favorite of all the bags I've seen lately. Wonderful fabric!
