Picky Picky Picky: Making Decisions on Color

As I said in my previous post, the next project in my crochet queue is a blanket for my daughter. Decision making is not one of my daughter's strong points so her color choices have changed dramatically over the last few weeks. To make it a little easier, I went to the Lion Brand website and dragged off a variety of colors from the Vanna's Choice yarns and played with different arrangements on my desktop. We finally came up with the above combination: chocolate, taupe, linen, pink, and antique rose. If you have trouble deciding on colors this is a great way to try out different combinations and to live with them a bit before making your purchase.
If I had figured this out sooner though I wouldn't have the yarn stash I do now. Not sure if that's good or bad but there it is.

How do you do that - "dragged off a variety of colors from the Vanna's Choice yarns"?
I tried copy and paste to the desktop and only get a jpg image that doesn't make a picture. ;((
My current Vanna's granny square afghan colors are dusty rose, rose and dusty green which I thought would look a little like a rose (one big square). Also because pink and chartreuse were my 7th grade class colors we all hated and it's a bow to my 7th grade teacher, one of the best in the business.
I love your selections shown, though.

A really interesting post about color (she's writing about quilts, but it's applicable to all art)

What fabulous colours! Wish we could get Lion brand over in the UK. Also thank you for the Sweetheart pattern, got it from Jane at Posy. It is very addictive, thank you very much.

The colours look fantastic together. Thanks for the tip on how to choose good colour schemes. It can be hard to get it right sometimes.

Love the color combo. I LOVE Vanna's Choice yarn! It's sooo soft! I started a Hexagon afghan using ALL of the Vanna's Choice colors except black and white.

Beautiful colors!
And you're SO amazingly awesome at crochet! I'm teaching myself and so far my attempts are somewhat lumpy and odd looking. I continue to try, though. I assume I'll get better..?

I just bought a bunch of skeins of Vanna's Choice for a granny-square afghan and they really are so beautiful - and it is really easy to work with. At first I was wondering if I should have purchased a yarn with more wool (or cotton) but I did a few blind "feel" tests for softness and each time I preferred her yarn over the natural stuff. Good luck with your project- those colors you picked are gorgeous!

That's a great idea! I have alot of trouble making decisions like that, too. (That's where I turn to DH for advice!)
By the way, you've been tagged as one of my favorite bloggers, but don't feel obligated to participate. I know you are very busy. Just know that I enjoy reading your blog!

Cassi, I just love those colors together, hopefully your daughter doesn't change her mind! I can't wait to see your finished blanket. I saw those Vanna yarns in the store last week, such lovely muted colors. I may have to trade the sewing machine for a crochet hook for a while...

another great source for colorscheming I just found is colourlovers.com. It allows you to look at color schemes and create your own.

Agreed, the colors are great, I hadn't seen the full palette for Vanna's Choice - so I went and I dragged off the colors so I could play too! Brilliant idea :)

Nice colors. I know your 'pain': my daughter has such a difficult time making choices as well. The fewer things to choose, the better for all involved! :)

Love the color choice.

That color combination is beautiful. It looks very similar to a granny blanket my mother made me when I was little. My youngest sleeps with it every night. It's going to be lovely.
